Updated for 2026. Medically supervised detox remains a covered, medically necessary benefit under NYSHIP and the Empire Plan for the 2026 plan year. Specific copays and authorization steps can vary by plan and year, so verify your current benefits before you start.
Detox is often the first step in recovery, and for many substances it is also a matter of safety. If you are a New York State or government employee, your NYSHIP coverage — usually the Empire Plan — typically covers medically supervised detox when it is medically necessary. Coverage varies by your specific plan, but withdrawal management is a core part of addiction care that parity law is designed to protect.
Medically supervised detox, or withdrawal management, is care that helps your body clear a substance safely while clinicians monitor your symptoms and manage them with medication and support. Depending on the substance and severity, detox may take place in an inpatient setting with 24-hour monitoring or, for milder cases, in a closely supervised outpatient setting. The goal is to keep you safe and comfortable and to prepare you for the next stage of treatment.
For some substances, stopping abruptly without medical support can be dangerous. This is a major reason plans cover detox as a medical service rather than treating it as optional.
Alcohol withdrawal can be serious and, in severe cases, life-threatening. Supervised detox helps manage symptoms safely. See alcohol detox.
Opioid withdrawal is intensely uncomfortable, and medication can ease it while reducing relapse risk. See opioid treatment.
Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous and usually requires a carefully managed, gradual taper under medical supervision.
Withdrawal from other drugs may still warrant monitoring, especially when other health conditions are present.
Because detox is generally treated as medically necessary care, NYSHIP plans commonly cover it. A few things shape how your coverage applies:
Parity law plays an important role here. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), most plans cannot apply harsher limits or higher costs to substance-use care, including detox, than they apply to comparable medical care.
Detox addresses the physical side of dependence, but on its own it is rarely enough for lasting recovery. That is why detox is usually the entry point to a broader plan that may include residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, or medication-assisted treatment. Coordinating coverage across these levels helps care continue smoothly as you step down.
We do not quote specific dollar figures because they vary by plan and year. Your out-of-pocket cost for detox generally depends on your deductible, your copay or coinsurance, whether the provider is in-network, and your annual out-of-pocket maximum. We can walk you through these factors when we verify your benefits.
